1900 to 1999

By 1901 Aberdeen had a population of 153,000 and covered more than 6,000 acres, with corresponding growth in every field of Council activity.

The 20th century brought new responsibilities for local government. Many problems were tackled, not least the slum clearances of the 1930s and the growth of municipal housing and new roads, schools, libraries and community centres were built.

Freedom of the City

The reigning monarchs of the 20th and 21st century have all regularly visited Aberdeen and the Freedom Roll has been enhanced with such names as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Sir Winston Churchill and Mikhail Gorbachev and Alex Ferguson, Manchester United and former Aberdeen Football Club manager. The last Freedom of the City was awarded to Scotland The Whats Stephen Robertson, William "Buff" Hardie and George Donald. The ever popular trio have entertained Aberdeen and Scotland with a range of comedy sketches and funny songs since the 1950s.

The Discovery of Oil
