Aberdeen's relationship with the Faroe Islands was forged through both communities’ dependency on the fishing industry. The City's subsequent involvement in the development of the new Faroese oil and gas sector is a natural extension of this relationship.
Business Development
In 1999 Torshavn Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U) with Aberdeen City Council which commits both parties to foster business and trade development opportunities, both at home and where appropriate, jointly in third markets. Since the signing of the M.O.U, a number of trade missions have taken place to both Aberdeen and Torshavn, resulting in increased business between the cities and several new partnership agreements.
