Aberdeenshire
As a brief introduction, Aberdeenshire is a region rich with countryside, mountainous landscapes and historic villages that surrounds and expands out from the city of Aberdeen. The Aberdeenshire area is predominantly rural in nature, with a dispersal of small towns and villages providing residents and visitors with a range of exciting outdoor and indoor activities and quality local produce. Aberdeenshire also has a rich prehistoric and historic heritage, as it contains a large number of interesting archaeological sites. Aberdeenshire is home to sites including Longman Hill, Kempstone Hill, Catto Long Barrow and Cairn Lee.
Contrary to popular belief, present day Aberdeenshire does not include Aberdeen City, which is a Council Area in its own right, and considered separately from Aberdeenshire. As the only Scottish council whose headquarters are based out with its area's border, Aberdeenshire Council is based in Woodhill house in the centre of Aberdeen. The current Aberdeenshire Council area is named after the historic county of Aberdeen and is a combination of three previously separate district councils. In 1996, under the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act 1994, the Banff and Buchan district, the Gordon district and the Kincardine and Deeside district were merged to form the present Aberdeenshire council area.
Aberdeenshire is recognised for its outward looking, pioneering spirit and enjoys high economic activity, with a GDP growth rate above the Scottish average. Aberdeenshire boasts the second highest rate of business formation and Aberdeen has the most knowledge based businesses in Scotland. The wealth which the oil and gas industry has brought to Aberdeenshire is reflected in many positive ways, such as low unemployment, high consumer spending, a construction boom and opportunities for investment in many areas in and around Aberdeenshire, to name but a few.
Aberdeenshire has managed to maintain its natural beauty while still moving forward and developing economically. With this blend of local charm and a high standard of living Aberdeenshire is definitely a place to consider whether you are looking to relocate or just to get away from the city and enjoy something a bit different.
