Labour Market
Employment
Aberdeen City and Shire has a higher representation of employment in professional, skilled trades, process plant and machine operatives, and elementary occupations than anywhere else in the UK. This is a clear reflection of the economic structure within the area, with a strong emphasis on oil and gas, financial services and manufacturing.
Occupations relatively under-represented in Aberdeen City and Shire, include administrative and secretarial, personal services, sales and customer services and associate professional/technical services.
In 2003, self-employment in the area accounted for 11 per cent of total employment. By 2021, this is expected to grow by 12 per cent to 13 per cent of total employment.
