Medical Case Study - Dr Roelf Dojkhuizen, Medical Director, NHS Grampian.
"After completing my medical degree in the Netherlands I moved to the United Kingdom in January 1988. I had a long term ambition to escape crowded Holland where on a sunny day all 16 million people may decide to go to the beach at the same time! Unfortunately I ended up in London for the first four years where all 7 million people decide to take the tube to work every morning!

I came to Aberdeen in August 1992. The city provides an excellent work-life balance with good schools for the children. The wide streets typify the space available and the city is big enough to have everything in terms of sport, culture and shopping, but small enough to keep access to these amenities easy. We have a beach and two beautiful rivers. Aberdeenshire and Moray provide a wide range of exciting outdoor activities, from windsurfing to rock climbing, and with a bit of luck there is some good skiing in the winter. For me, Aberdeen City and Shire is a great place to live and work."

NHS Grampian has 16,000 health care workers. The organisation works as a single system which means that services are planned and delivered jointly by community and hospital  services.

Foresterhill Health Campus

The Foresterhill Health Campus in Aberdeen is jointly owned by Aberdeen University and the NHS and has all clinical specialities together on one site. There is a new children's Hospital and the site is presently being modernised further with a new Dental Institute, a joint NHS / University educational centre and an Emergency care centre where hospital and community emergency services will work together as one unit in the assessment and treatment of emergency patients.
